Water bill jumped? Here’s the 30-minute test

Step 1 — right now
Do this before you do anything else
This costs nothing and doesn’t need us. It’s the difference between a mop and an insurance claim.
- 1
Turn off every tap and water-using appliance
Including the washing machine, dishwasher and any irrigation timer. Nothing in the house should be drawing water.
- 2
Write down the meter reading
All of it, including the small dial. Many meters also have a tiny red leak indicator that spins with even a trickle.
- 3
Wait 30 minutes without using any water
No toilets, no taps. Then read it again.
- 4
If the reading moved, you have a leak
There’s no other explanation. It’s on your side of the meter, and it’s costing you money every hour.
Step 2 — what it probably is
The usual causes, in plain English
A leaking toilet cistern
The most common and the most invisible. A failed outlet valve can waste over 200 litres a day silently.
An underground supply line
Common on acreage where the run from the boundary to the house can be a hundred metres. Often surfaces nowhere.
A slab leak
Water under the concrete. Usually shows as a warm patch on the floor or unexplained damp at the skirting.
Step 3 — what it costs
So you know before you ring
One hole instead of four.
Non-destructive leak detection using acoustic equipment and thermal imaging, with a written report insurers accept, is quoted as a fixed job. The point is that we open one specific spot instead of four exploratory holes — which is usually where the real saving is.

Common questions
A leaking toilet cistern alone can waste over 200 litres a day without making a sound. A dripping tap wastes around 20,000 litres a year. An underground supply leak can run for months before anything shows on the surface.
We locate it without breaking anything, using acoustic correlation, thermal imaging and tracer gas. Repairing it usually means opening one targeted spot — that’s the whole point of detecting it properly first.
